Information, News & Reminders for Parents & Caregivers

For the past 20 years, Jean Carr has loyally served the Defiance Catholic Community. For the past eight years, her title has been school secretary for Holy Cross Catholic School. Prior to HCCS, Jean worked at St. Mary Church for 12 years. She will tell you that the past two decades haven’t been a job to her, it’s been a blessed ministry.  “The connections and friendships I have made over the years will be cherished forever.” says Carr.

Those who have had the privilege to work with her, and HCCS families that know her, know she serves beyond the role of a secretary. (Many students have referred to her as “Vice Principal”!)

Informally, she has played a role as school nurse, (administering countless bandaids and ice packs), school counselor (consoling a sad child or a stressed colleague!), marketing (she is the voice of HCCS when you call our school and the proofreader extraordinaire), enrollment (ensuring all who apply to HCCS get white glove service throughout the application process), business manager, and the list goes on! She has given generously of her time beyond measure and will be missed tremendously by her HCCS family.

Carr says she too will miss seeing all the students and staff on a daily basis. “The favorite part of my job has been helping families raise their children in the Catholic faith by being a caring and consistent presence for the students.”

Jean will retire at the end of December. One goal she has for retirement is to be able to do volunteer work and to spend more time with our family. Congratulations Jean!

Mrs. Carr’s successors, Shannon Alvarado and Renee Sampson will job-share, each working part time with a start date the week of January 4th.

Our students, their families and our friends have been remarkably supportive of the EPIC fundraising and Social & Emotional Wellness efforts underway.

Life is different and tough for many. Through a partnership with the Defiance YMCA, our students and staff will have access to social, emotional and physical wellness support beginning in 2020. Part of our goal is to provide every student with a 1 year YMCA membership. We are about $1,200 away from reaching that goal! AND…if we raise about $7,000 more, all staff will also be provided with a YMCA membership, including free classes and fitness evaluations. We can do this! Next week is the last week of our fundraiser!

  • for those who have a Facebook fundraiser active, you may want to take a moment to provide an update and share a reminder about your fundraiser.

We can’t wait for a full week of fun! Please see the list of Holiday Activities happening at HCCS.

The Christmas Program was wonderful! The video of the program is located at

Thanks to a grant HCCS received from the United Way donors, ALL students will receive $10 in free books! Thank you to all the parents/guardians who took the time to select a book for your child. If you didn’t have an opportunity to select a book, don’t worry, your child will still get a book! We are hoping we will be able to send each child home with their new books over break!
